What are Yin and Yang?
Yin and Yang are concepts of Taoism that expose the duality of everything that exists in the universe. They describe the two opposite and complementary fundamental forces that are found in all things: the yin is the beginning of the night, the Moon, passivity, absorption. The yang is the principle of the Sun, day, light and activity.
The colors where the day and night, the masculine and feminine, the earth and the sky, configure the sensation of harmony in which the opposite is complemented and flows to give dynamism and meaning to life.
When this is applied to yoga, Yin yoga is a slower practice, where poses are held longer to work on deeper tissues such as the muscle fascia, joints in the body and emotional levels. Yang yoga, in contrast, refers to a more active practice to work on muscles and blood flow. Thus building strength, stamina and flexibility.
For a balanced practice of yoga we need elements of both Yang and Yin.
