What is Homeopathy and how does it work? Homeopath Tanya Artus gives a introduction to this subtle but powerful personalised medicine for mind, body and soul.
Like many Homeopaths, I was inspired to train as a Homeopath after experiencing it’s astounding effects on my own health. During my teenage years I suffered from severe eczema around my mouth which caused me much physical and emotional distress.
After months of trying over the counter and prescribed creams, to no avail, my Dad took me to a Homeopath. Within a week of taking the prescribed remedies my skin had completely cleared! I was so intrigued that years later I embarked on my training as a Homeopath and I have never looked back!
Dr. Samuel Hahnemann
To properly understand Homeopathy it’s helpful to know a little about it’s development by the brilliant and well respected Doctor Samuel Hahnemann who founded Homeopathy.
Over time, Dr. Hahnemann became disillusioned by the practices of orthodox medicine to the point where he left medical practice to become a translator of medical books. One day he was translating a text about the Peruvian bark (Cinchona) which was used to make quinine as a malarial treatment. The therapeutic properties of Cinchona in treating malaria were attributed to it’s bitter and astringent properties.
Samuel Hahnemann, having an inquiring mind, wasn’t satisfied with this explanation as many other plants are bitter and yet they are not effective in the treatment of malaria. So, Hahnemann took repeated doses of cinchona and found that he developed symptoms similar to malaria (but not the disease itself). The effects wore off and he returned to his former health but when he repeated the experiment the symptoms of malaria returned.
What is Homeopathy?
Samuel Hahnemann had discovered that
A substance that can cause particular symptoms in a healthy person can be used to treat a similar set of symptoms in a sick person i.e that “like cures like”.
The name Homeopathy is derived from the Greek word “homoios” meaning similar and “pathos” meaning suffering. One example of this would be coffee which, in certain people, can invoke sleeplessness, mental hyperactivity, palpitations and headaches. Coffea is one of the homeopathic remedies that might be used to help a person with these symptoms.
Many clients are fascinated by the homeopathic consultation as we ask a lot of questions! To accurately prescribe homeopathic medicines we need to know about your current symptoms in great detail, what makes your symptoms better or worse, what was happening in your life when the problem started, how you are feeling mentally and emotionally, your past medical history and much more. This information enables us to prescribe the homeopathic medicine which most closely resembles your collection of physical, mental and emotional symptoms.
Homeopathy stimulates your self-healing ability to bring about balance
Homeopathic remedies are selected based on your individual set of symptoms as we all express dis-ease in a different way.
Homeopathy works in harmony with your body. It gives your self-healing mechanism a nudge so that your body can re-balance itself. Symptoms are always a sign that something is out of balance within the body and when the balance is restored symptoms naturally disappear.
Mind Body Spirit
One of the things I love the most about homeopathy is it’s ability to restore balance physically, mentally and emotionally. For example, I am often consulted to help women suffering from hormonal imbalances which are accompanied by irritability, anger, anxiety or tearfulness. Homeopathy helps to resolve the emotional disturbance as well as the physical symptoms.
Who is Homeopathy suitable for?
Homeopathy is safe for people of all ages, including babies and pregnant women. It may be used for physical, mental and emotional symptoms, acute conditions, chronic illness and in first aid situations (in conjunction with medical treatment).
I am regularly consulted by women for help with hormonal issues and also for anxiety which seems to be particularly prevalent in modern day life. Very often I end up becoming the family Homeopath which is great ! Recent childhood cases include severe anxiety, hay fever, constipation, headaches and cystitis, all of which were resolved with the homeopathic remedies.
What are Homeopathic remedies made from?
Homeopathic remedies are made from a wide range of substances; vegetable, mineral and animal. The small amount of starting material needed to make homeopathic remedies makes it an environmentally friendly system of medicine.
Homeopathic remedies are safe, non toxic and may be used on their own or alongside medical drugs or other therapies.
